Royal Society of Medicine

On the 6th of June 2011, the Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine Section was at the centre of the news because of claims that the NHS could save money–a huge amount of money–if hospitals employ fully qualified therapists to use hypnosis in treatment. The overall message of fellows of the society was that hypnosis is a very powerful tool that can be used on its own or in conjunction with medical treatment, but that patients should be protected from, as Jacky Owens, president of the section calls them, ‘hypno-cowboys’.

She said,

“Conditions such as depression, pain and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affect millions of people in the UK and a great cost to the NHS. But hypnosis can often work where other treatments have been unsuccessful”.

Hypnosis is, at long last recognised by NICE as an intervention for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and Peter Whorwell in Manchester has shown that his gut directed approach is significantly effective in treatment. However, there are many other conditions that have been treated effectively with hypnosis including depression, phobic anxiety, agoraphobia, psychosomatic pain, OCD, sleep disorders, eating disorders, anxiety, grief, chemotherapy-induced nausea, PTSD amongst others.

Amongst other specialists, Dr David Kraft gave a lecture on the use of hypnosis for smoking cessation. He gave a detailed account of a case study: the client was a man in his early 30s who had smoked over 25 cigarettes for about 20 years. Dr Kraft used hypnosis and a number of techniques which he described for the audience. He showed that it is possible to use hypnosis and help people give up smoking in one session. In one hour.

David Kraft is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine Section. He is also a member of the British Society of Clinical & Academic Hypnosis (BSCAH) and on the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR). He has written and co-written over 10 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals in England and Australia and has given lectures at the Royal Society of Medicine of four occasions. David has spent a great deal of time treating people with phobic anxiety, but has recently also had a lot of success helping people give up smoking. He uses covert sensitization (aversion therapy) in his approach and has even help people to reduce their cravings to a minimum.

Smoking has a deleterious effect on almost all of the organs in the body and is responsible for many deaths each year.

To give up, phone Dr Kraft on 0207 467 8564. Now!!!

Dear hypnotherapist/psychotherapist

My name is Margaret. I have been working really hard to try to take off weight. I have a comprehensive understanding of the principles of taking off weight. I understand that you have to eat small meals and that you should not snack in between eating sessions. I also understand that sugar is not helpful and that we should reduce a fat intake. I know of of this. I have taken off a stone so far. But I have these sessions that take place where I don’t care. I binge eat and the more I eat the more I don’t care. I say to myself, ‘Well, I have eaten this so I might as well eat this cake as well, or this pizza, or this pint of beer’. And then in the morning, I feel really guilty and it puts me back three days worth of dieting. Or more…….

Can you help me stop having this attacks? I have many friends that have tried hypnotherapy and they have been helped for all sorts of problems. I have looked on your website and I have been really impressed. I look at the section entitled, ‘Weight Loss Hypnotherapy’. What is ‘Weight Loss Hypnotherapy’. Can it help me with my binge eating and will it help me to take off weight in the future? I am in it for the long term and really want to get to my ideal weight. Hypnotherapy must be the right thing for me. I want it to empower me to have more control. At the moment I am 11 stone, but I am not tall and my ideal weight is 9 stone. I am also doing exercise at the gym and this has helped me to take off weight in the past. I am also looking trimmer and fitter. I reallly hope hypnotherapy will work. The cardiovascular work that I have been doing has given me more energy too, but some weeks I put on muscle and weigh more. I only weigh myself at the end of each week, and I don’t do this every day. I am looking for a top hypnotherapist. Someone who really knows what he is doing. A hypnotherapist based in somewhere like Harley Street like yourself.

Can you get me an appointment and how do I do it.

Margaret

Dear Margaret

Yes certainly I can help. One used to have to go to one’s GP to get a referral letter, but now, all one has to do is to go to London Hypnotherapy UK or London Psychotherapy directly, and then book an appointment. The links are below:

www.londonhypnotherapyuk.com and www.londonpsychotherapy.co.uk

‘Weight Loss Hypnotherapy’ is the general name given to treatment programmes which use hypnotherapy to help people to take off weight. Some hypnotherapist use a strict regimented approach which last s for a certain number of weeks; I, however, tend to build a treatment programme around the needs of the individual client, and this strategy is tailor made to suit your needs. I have had a great deal of success working with a number of people who have had eating disorders. However, binge eating, in any any of its forms is not classed as an eating disorder. Certainly, the aim of the hypnotherapy is to help you to take off weight and to keep it off in the future.

If you would like to book a session, please feel free to ring me at 10 Harley Street, London, W1G 9PF. I look forward to speaking to you. The number is as follows: 0207 467 8564.

Dear Sir

I just need some help with a few things. I want to have hypnotherapy with a trained hypnotherapist. Do you use psychotherapy or hypnotherapy? I understand that hypnotherapy is safe and that it involves two people and no drugs but will I be aware of what happens during the process. Can hypnotherapy be used to treat phobias, and how long does the treatment last. My friend had hypnotherapy three years back and she said that it helped her a great amount. She never felt better. What are the effects of hypnotherapy and how long do they last.

I need a hypnotherapist in central London, and I looked at your website. I decided to send you this e-mail because I thought that you looked like a fully trained hypnotherapist and not just some wacky witch doctor who was just taking people’s money, or a bored housewife who has re-trained because she wants to ‘help people’. Please advise. Kartrina

Dear Katrina

You are fully aware of what is happening during the hypnotherapy. Please see my CV on the website or the information about me at the end of this message. I have been using psychotherapy and hypnosis for years and very successfully. I use hypnotherapy to enhance my work in the psychodynamic psychotherapy. I have treated many individuals with phobic anxiety and successfully. I cannot give guarantees: it would not be fair. However, I do like to think of the work in short phases and do not see the point of drawing things out. Once we have got to the root of the problem, the effects are, in many cases, long lasting.

If you would like to book an appointment, please do not hesitate to ring me on 0207 467 8564.

Best of luck

Dr David Kraft

Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy

Dear Sir

I would like to give up smoking but I am unable to do it. My mother spoke to me the other day and he said that she would pay for some hypnotherapy session for me. She said that many of her friends have gone to a hypnotherapists and that the effects are long lasting. She also that that it doesn’t take too long and that I would have to come for half a year or more. She said that it can take three or four sessions. Is this right? I really want to give up smoking. I have been smoking for eight years now. I have tried nicotine patches but they just make me feel ill. I have tried acupuncture to help me stop but that didn’t work at all. I have also tried nicotine gum. I am afraid that I will put on weight too. Please advise. Dawn

Dear Dawn

Thank you for the e-mail. Indeed, the approach that we use at London Hypnotherapy UK is fast and effective: some individuals are able to stop smoking in one session while others need up to three or four sessions. Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy, a technique in this case which combines psychodynamic psychotherapy with covert sensitization, is both powerful and long lasting too. However, it is important to note that it is a complete abstinence programme; once you start treatment, you must say to yourself that you will never have one cigarette again. You become a non smoker–not for five years or so, but for life. This cost effective treatment is also good because it doesn’t use medication and there are no side effects. Best of luck.

London Hypnosis

Dear hypnotherapist

I have been suffering from depression for some time, and I don’t know it is genetic or whether I have had bad experiences in the past. All I can say is that sometimes I feel dreadful, I feel useless, and can’t get out of bed. I feel that I don’t want to do anything, and that everything is useless. I first went to my GP and she gave me beta blockers. I then went for a one off session to see a psychiatrist and he worried me. He said that I had clinical depression and he prescribed me Allegron. I was taking 25mg for some time and this made me feel out of control. I felt that my emotions were numbed and that I didn’t care about what was going on around me. Please help me.

I heard that hypnotherapy was usefull and can help people get out of depression. I also read that it provides support and that one can use hypnotherapy to boost you at your time of need. Can you help? Two of my friends said that they have used hypnosis. Is hypnotherapy the same thing as hypnosis? Please help.

H

Dear H

Thank you for your enquiry. The first thing that I should say is that I don’t want to interfere with anything that your psychiatrist has said; I should also point out that I am not a psychiatrist and I do not prescribe medication. If you would like to see me for a consultation, that is fine, but you would have to get a referral letter from your psychiatrist. I wold then be happy to see you. Allegron is the trade name for Nortriptyline and it is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCAD). They work by blocking the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline into the neurons: they prolong the effects of these neurotranssmitters. I tend not to user labels in therapy. I find that labelling someone is unhelpful, and many people have been affected by false or generalized labelling. I use hypnosis in my practice to augment the work that I do in the psychodynamic psychotherapy. Essentially, the term hypnotherapy is a misnomer. Although I often use the term for convenience, hypnotherapy refers to a form of treatment in which the therapist uses hypnosis; however, I believe that hypnosis should only be used with another existing therapy such as CBT, psychotherapy, dentistry, clinical psychology etc. Perhaps, it is not worth getting bogged down with terminology. If you would like to book a session, please feel free to ring the number below. Hypnosis, used in conjunction with psychotherapy, which is the approach that I take, is a very powerful and effective form of treatment which has no side effects, and it is a programme which does not use medication.

The best of luck
