Unconditional Positive Regard

I believe that unconditional positive
regard is one of the most important aspects to what I do as a therapist. It is
difficult as a therapist. We see lots of clients, and we don’t know whether
they are telling the truth or not, or whether they do what they say they are
going to do. And this is more difficult when we see clients on a long term
basis. And what do we do when someone is going to act in a certain way and we
don’t approve of this. Obviously, if it is an ethical concern one has to deal
with this appropriately with regard to UKCP regulations. But what if it is
something that we just feel is over the top or not right. We should delve into
our own consciousness to see whether we are showing signs of prejudice. If we
challenge our client we might break rapport.

This sounds a bit abstract, so I am going to give some example. What would you
do if you found out that your client was intending writing a long e-mail to
everyone in a Scout Group—all the organizers, the treasurer, chairman, all the
parents, the cleaners, secretary and so forth. Your client is upset that no one
was there to help him when he arrived last Thursday. He reads out a three page
e-mail with a reply from an irate lady. He now says that he is going to write
to the local MP, the houses of commons, the pope, Tony Blair and so forth.

You mention to him that this might be over the top, but you can do little more
than this. You can’t him not to do this. It will be difficult o show
unconditional positive regard after this. And, even if, through the words you
say, you are keeping to this principle, your body language may not be.
However, as far as possible, and there are no absolutes, one should have an
unconditional positive regard for one’s clients, even if it is difficult.
Another example is this.
What might you do after your client has had a huge transference and has
directed all his or her aggression towards you. This involved swearing,
accusations that you are useless and threatening language. One has to
understand why this transference has taken place. Even so, it might be very
difficult to show UPR after this experience.

Some initial thoughts…

With many of my clients, I feel that they
are constantly being challenged and not believed. They are being told off or
put in a compromising position. However, when speaking to me, this is often the
first time that they are not challenged. This is often the first time that they
feel supported unconditionally. And, whatever they say—within reason—they know
that they will have my support.

This enables them to say whatever they need to get better, or to work things
through. Because of my non-judgemental approach (Rogers, 1968)—which is
inextricably linked with UPR—they might be able to tell me about things they
haven’t told anyone else about. They can go into free association without fear
that they might be judged. This enables my clients to be ‘authentic’ (Rogers,
1971). UPR builds trust.

London Psychotherapist. In Treatment.

Dear Dr David Kraft

I am looking for a psychotherapist who can helping me with my IBS. I have been to the GP and I still suffer from IBS. I get bloated, and stomach cramps; I also suffer from diarrhoea and constipation although this alternates and only happens occasionally. Te doctors said that this was all down to stress and I felt that this was the case too. When I am not at work–I am a solicitor–I do not have any symptoms at all. I love y work but it is so stressful. My GP, who is also a friend of mine and the family, suggested that I see a hypnotherapist but someone who is also trained in psychotherapy. I looked at your website and found your name. Can you treat me. I also see that you have written a paper on the treatment of IBS using hypnotherapy, and you obviously have had a great deal of experience in this form of treatment. In the paper you use hypnotherapy and use a river approach. I thought that this sounded interesting, but I don’t know much about it. My family are worried about me because this has affected my social life too. I want desperately to see a hypnotherapist now so that I can get better. So, after much deliberation, I decided to go to you, to get some help privately. I have been to a hypnotherapist in London Before. He used hypnotherapy to treat my anxiety, but the hypnotherapy, in this case, transformed me into someone who was not stressed but who had IBS. This is no good. I want to be able to cope with the stresses of life without converting it into pain or anxiety. I think that I am a little bit neurotic and I want to use the hypnotherapy to help me control this. Can you do all this? If you can help, please e-mail back. I know that the treatment might last a while but I am ready to sorry this IBS out now.

Thanks

Mrs F

Dear Mrs F

I can certainly help. Please give me a ring on 0207 467 8564 and arrange a consultation session. In this session, we will construct a treatment programme that that suits you. When you are in treatment, you will notice an immediate difference in the way you feel. The hypnotherapy also help you to get better on your own, and I will teach you self hypnosis for you to use in stressful situations. In my experience, the hypnotherapy has long lasting effects.

In Treatment. Psychotherapy. Psychotherapist. Therapist.

London Psychotherapy 10 HARLEY STREET LONDON, W1G 9PF (0207 467 8564)

Dear London Psychotherapy

I am so excited about seeing Dr David Kraft. I know that I probably shouldn’t write like this, but I have to get it off my chest. I have been watching the HBO therapy/psychotherapy adaptation with Gabriel Byrne and I have seen the 5 episodes that have been available in the UK. I have to say that my experience with Dr Kraft has been so similar to In Treatment. I love it. Sometimes I laugh, and sometimes I cry, and other times I get really nervous or excited. I love it. I think everyone should have ‘IN TREATMENT’ like this at London Psychotherapy. I fell in love with the programme In Treatment because it was so cool. I feel like a famous actress going to see a shrink, or a Hollywood writer, or a mafia boss. I talk about whatever I want to talk about and I feel so great afterwards. Dr Kraft is not judgemental and he does not interrupt me. It is similar to In Treatment, by Dr Kraft is more professional. You get a real sense that he has had a lot of experience in this field; and also, you know that he is not an actor. Sometimes, I get embarrassed. I think that I am a character in In Treatment when I sit in those big lounge chairs  in Harley Street. Even walking down Harley Street is an experience. Try it for yourselves. I can’t wait to watch more episodes of In Treatment too.

Thank you

GM

London Hypnotherapist. Harley Street Hypnotherapist.

Hi Dr David Kraft

I have had a history of bipolar disorder ad I have been Duloxetine for some time now. I have taken 30mg an 60mg at various points of the last year. I was initially diagnosed with depression in the late 1980s, and I was referred to a psychotherapist at the Tavistock. Since then, I have seen a consultant psychiatrist in Wigmore Street, and another two in Harley Street. I have been diagnosed with depression, mania and bipolar disorder, but, at present, they all seem to agree, with the twists and turns of my problem, that I have bipolar disorder. Over the last twenty years I have taken Clomipramine hydrochlor., Lithium, Citalopram (this made me worse, and I felt really out of control), Reboxetine, Fluvoxamine, Venlafaxine, Maprotiline, Setraline and various other Tetracyclic and Tricyclic antidepressants, SNRIs (selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors) and Lithium salts. But I have never felt better than when I was taken off these drugs and I saw a psychotherapist in Harley Street. I felt that I had his support, and I felt that I was in control; and, in addition, I felt that I was getting to the root of the problem. I also used hypnotherapy, and this was aso a great comfort to me. I would like to see a similar psychotherapist, and one that works near or in Harley Street. I also would like to see someone who uses hypnotherapy, too. Plainly, I would like to see someone who is well qualified and who is similar to the psychotherapist I saw three years ago. He is not available now. Can you help? I have been reading your website and feel that you are independent and Freudian. I do not want to see a Freudian Psychotherapist, a Jungian Psychologist, an Object Relations Psychotherapist or anyone trained and brain-washed by these systems. I want to see someone who is an independent psychotherapist, who is adaptable, and who also uses hypnotherapy.

Andrea

Dear Andrea

Yes I can certainly see you in Harley Street. I regard myself as an independent psychotherapist who also uses hypnotherapy. Please phone for an appointment.

Many thanks

Hypnotherapist London

Dear Dr Kraft

I have been looking at your website–in fact the website of London Hypnotherapy UK–and I am really keen to see you at 10 Harley Street. How many people work at London Hypnotherapy UK? I would really like to see you if possible because I need you to help me and I want the best hypnotherapist possible. When I come for the first session, will we be able to use hypnotherapy/hypnosis straight away? My friend went to see a hypnotherapist last year for her eating problems–she eats too much chocolate–and she has now taken off nearly a stone. It sounds like hypnotherapy is really very powerful indeed. My mother also went to see a hypnotherapist in Cardiff near where she works and she has found that she likes to keep seeing him for top up regularly–well, once every three or four months. She finds it really helpful to do this from time to time. She suffers from IBS. Also a really good friend of mine came over from Saudi Arabia especially to see you and he is now so much better. He had all sorts of problems and he is so much happier now having seen you. Thank you so much for that!

I also have problems with IBS. I feel bloated and I sometimes have constipation and sometimes suffer from diarrhea.

Many thanks

Del

Dear Del

Of course I can help you and I can also offer you ‘top up sessions’ if you feel that they would be helpful. I am the therapist at London Hypnotherapy UK. We will use hypnotherapy at the first session when you feel that it is appropriate to do so.

Hypnotherapist London

Dear hypnotherapist

My name is Freddie and I am looking for someone that can help me with fear of flying. I started being scared of heights, but, one day, my family suggested that I needed to go back to Australia to see my grandfather and father. My parents split up when I was only 16, and I moved to the UK when I was 22. I have been in the UK ever since and I am now 31. I don’t really want to see my father at all. I fear that my phobia is not actually to do with flying at all. It is an excuse. I don’t want to see my horrible father who abused my mother and who talked down to me every day.

I heard that hypnotherapy was really helpful when helping people with phobias. I want to go on a plane, but just not to Australia. But I also need to speak to someone who is a psychotherapist–someone who really understand where I am coming from. I looked at your website and I can see clearly that you are both a hypnotherapist and a psychotherapist. I have done a huge amount of work on the Internet trying to find the therapist that will be suitable for me. I think that the answer is to meet someone who is a psychotherapist and a hypnotherapist. I am not interested in Jungian psychology, Kohutian psychotherapy or alternative medicine. I would like to deal with these problems now in a caring and effective way. I want to work in Qatar and in Saudi Arabia next year; I went there to work for about three weeks, and this was about five years ago. This would be the motivation for wanting to be able to fly again. I read that motivation was really important in therapy and I have had psychotherapy before in Australia. I want to go to Saudi in particular because of the weather and I have lots and lots of male friends there.

Thanks

Freddie

Dear Freddie

It sounds like you have done a huge amount of work on this phobia already. I don’t like to say a huge amount when I write e-mails to clients because any of my words can be misinterpreted. However, you seem to be moving in the right direction already. If you would like to book an appointment, please ring me at 10 Harley Street on 0207 467 8564.

With best wishes

Hypnotherapist London

Dear sir

I am Jim. I saw a psychologist last year because of my panic attacks and he sorted me out for a while. I was first given a number of drugs by my GP, but they didn’t work. They just left me feeling numb and out of control. I also felt tired. The drugs also affected my concentration during the day and this had serious consequences in my job. I then went to see this psychologist (clinical psychologist) and she gave me 12 sessions. I felt more in control of my life, and this was really good. Now, I am anxious again. It gets worse after long journeys on the tube. I find that I get more and more wound up, angry and anxious when I am surrounded by lots of people. It makes me feel really het up, like I was a teacher again. I am looking for a psychologist  or a psychotherapist or a hypnotherapist in the London area. Is there a London Hypnotherapy Centre that I can contact?

Thanks

Brian
