Wishing you all a Merry Christmas from Enfield Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy

In the recent copy of the Enfield and Haringey Independent, a short article focussed on the Christmas period and some of the pressures that people face at this time. Watching shoppers in Enfield Town can be revealing, particularly when you see individuals with huge Christmas shopping lists, rushing around the shops to get everything done. Christmas is supposed to be a time of giving, where people take a break and spend more time with their family. However, although Christmas is associated with a jolly Santa Claus and lots of fun music, some find this period of time stressful and anxiety-provoking. People are expected to buy presents of the family, and the cost of these presents, together with the expense of catering for an often over-indulgent lunch, can be difficult for most people to afford. Some people have difficulties with relatives; and then there are people who don’t talk to one or more members of their immediate family. Another category is the group of people who have lost members of their family and are simply alone at Christmas. And the expectation builds up… Many people are expected to attend Christmas functions and parties and then go to work the next day; and, for some, this causes a great deal of stress during this period. As a result, many people find this period complicated. Some find sleeping difficult; others develop psychosomatic symptoms or get frustrated or angry.

One way of the dealing with the stress of Christmas is to do careful planning. Some of my psychotherapy clients plan getting presents in a structured way and this helps them not feel too overwhelmed in the run up to Christmas Day. However, they also plan get-togethers with people that they know and trust—these events are helpful for feeling connected with people who make you feel good about yourself. Sometimes, people choose family members; but, often, they choose people in their lives with whom they can connect and talk to easily. If you are experiencing high levels of anxiety during the festive season, and need some additional support, please phone Enfield Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy today.
