Understanding Thai culture and the individual

Psychotherapy works best when you feel genuinely understood. For Thai clients, this can sometimes require an appreciation of the cultural background, values and social expectations that influence the way personal difficulties are experienced and expressed.

I have considerable experience working with Thai clients and have developed a long-standing understanding of Thai culture. I have been learning Thai for approximately twenty years, studied Thai at SOAS, University of London, and completed the second and third years of a degree in Thai. I also read and write Thai.

The sessions themselves would normally be conducted in English. My knowledge of Thai language and culture, however, means that you can discuss personal and emotional difficulties with someone who has a genuine understanding of the cultural context behind them.

Thai culture can place particular importance on family, respect, social harmony, obligation and avoiding confrontation. These values can have an important influence on relationships, family life and emotional wellbeing. Understanding this context can help psychotherapy to be more sensitive and appropriate, without reducing the individual to cultural stereotypes.

I work with each client as an individual, providing a confidential and non-judgemental environment in which difficulties can be explored openly. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, relationship problems, family difficulties, low self-esteem, bereavement or other personal concerns, psychotherapy can provide an opportunity to understand what is happening and consider meaningful changes.

If you are Thai and would feel more comfortable working with a psychotherapist who understands Thailand and Thai culture, I would be pleased to discuss how I may be able to help.
