REATTRIBUTION

Reattribution training is a cognitive-behavioural technique designed to help individuals shift unhelpful thought patterns by challenging and reframing the explanations they give for negative events. Often used with those experiencing depression or anxiety, it encourages individuals to consider alternative, more balanced causes for their difficulties rather than attributing everything to personal failure or permanent flaws. For instance, instead of concluding, “I failed the interview because I’m useless,” the person might be guided to consider other contributing factors such as a poor night’s sleep or external circumstances beyond their control.

The process involves structured questioning to examine the evidence behind a belief, identify possible cognitive distortions, and develop more realistic and compassionate interpretations. This helps reduce feelings of helplessness and hopelessness by promoting a more nuanced understanding of experiences. Over time, reattribution training can empower individuals to build resilience and engage more constructively with challenges in their daily lives.

This technique can be included as part of an overall approach in integrative psychotherapy.
