Therapy for Expats in Thailand

Therapy for Expats in Thailand

Thailand offers a paradise-like existence for many who choose to move there. With its golden sunshine, low cost of living, tropical beaches, and delicious street food, it’s no surprise that thousands of expats make the decision to call the Land of Smiles their new home. Whether it’s the peaceful rhythm of island life, the vibrant bustle of Bangkok, or the warm and seemingly gracious nature of the Thai people, life in Thailand can feel like an idyllic escape from the stressors of Western living.

However, beneath the surface of this tropical dream, the reality of living in a foreign country can be challenging—sometimes, painfully so. The honeymoon period can give way to a host of emotional and psychological pressures that many are unprepared to handle. Language barriers can make daily tasks stressful and isolating. Not knowing what people are saying, or worse, sensing that you’re being talked about in a language you don’t understand, can erode your confidence and sense of belonging.

Thai society, while famously hospitable on the surface, can at times be insular and difficult to penetrate. Many expats report feelings of exclusion, homesickness, and even experiences of xenophobia—being treated as outsiders or second-class citizens. These experiences can be particularly difficult in relationships with Thai partners, where cultural misunderstandings and differing values can lead to tension. The concept of “saving face,” indirect communication styles, and stubbornness around cultural norms can make resolving conflict a real challenge for many couples.

As someone who has been travelling to Thailand for over twenty years, I understand these issues intimately. I am fluent in Thai and am able to read and write in the language. Over the years, I’ve worked extensively with expats living in Thailand as well as with individuals who have returned home but are still navigating relationships with Thai partners. I know firsthand how rewarding but also how emotionally complicated life abroad can be.

My name is David Kraft, and I am a UKCP-registered psychotherapist and counsellor with a strong background in working with cultural issues, identity conflict, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and adjustment disorders. Having worked with both Thai clients and expats, I bring a deep understanding of cross-cultural dynamics to my sessions. Whether you’re currently living in Thailand, considering a move, or adjusting to life with a Thai partner in another country, therapy can offer you a safe, non-judgmental space to work through your unique challenges.

One of the advantages of my practice is flexibility. I offer online therapy sessions to accommodate clients no matter where they are in the world. Sessions are tailored to suit your time zone and specific emotional needs, whether you’re navigating isolation, cultural stress, or relationship challenges.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or simply in need of someone who truly understands what it’s like to live between cultures, I am here to help.
